Google Earth Help
Here are a some tips that we feel might help you explore our maps in Google Earth.
Why can't I open the KML file that I downloaded?
Why can't I see a list of maps to choose?
How can I get the maps to animate (auto-step through the timeline)?
How can I remove unwanted features (e.g., roads) from the map?
Why can't I open the KML file that I downloaded?
You must install the free Google Earth software on your computer to open the KML file.
If you already have Google Earth installed on your computer but still cannot open the KML file, then try the following:
- Opening Google Earth
- Choose "Open" in the dropdown menu at the top of your screen under "File"
- Browse to where you have saved the file
Why can't I see a list of maps to choose?
The sidebar might be hidden. Open it under "View" in the dropdown menu. In the sidebar, you should now see SNAP files listed under "Places." Be sure that there is a check mark next to "Temporary Places." Open and close folders within "Temporary Places" by clicking on the plus (+) or minus (-) signs next to each folder. Be sure to open all folders to see the full range of options. Click on each folder name to view a description of its contents in a popup text box.
How can I get the maps to animate or auto-step through the timeline.
Only the GCM Decadal Averages set of maps can be animated in Google Earth.
If you cannot see the time slider towards the top right, then choose View > Show Time > Always from the Google Earth menu.
Which time series of maps you view on the screen depends on which radio buttons are selected. Each series can be viewed using the time line at the top of the screen. Click on the right arrow to play the time series, or view it more slowly by moving the slider with your mouse. The first time you view a set of maps, there may be a brief delay as the maps load. Subsequently, the time series should appear smoothly.
How can I remove unwanted features (e.g., roads) from the map?
Click on check marks under "Layers" in the sidebar.
