SNAP collaboration yields insights on Arctic shipping and ecosystem effects

SNAP worked with the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Aleutian and Bering Sea Islands Landscape Conservation Cooperative (ABSI LCC) to better understand the risks presented by marine shipping traffic on the ecosystem services within the ABSI LCC area of interest.

After evaluating the integrity and completeness of data returned by land-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) station data in the Bering Strait region, SNAP and collaborators used AIS data from 2011-2013 collected from satellite-based receivers to describe the distribution and intensity of marine shipping routes throughout the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands region. The derived GIS layers produced will be shared broadly with regional stakeholders and managers.

See the Arctic Shipping Data Synthesis project page for details and links to data.
